Pride and Prejudice
Romance, Class, and the Marriage Market
Pride and Prejudice is a novel set in late 18th-century English society that follows the Bennet family, particularly the five Bennet sisters, as they navigate marriage, class, and social expectations. A central concern of Mrs Bennet is securing financially advantageous marriages for her daughters, since the family estate is entailed away from them and they have limited economic independence.
This tension between romance and economic strategy is one reason the story has been so widely adapted. The novel balances sharp social satire with genuine emotional warmth — Austen never lets the reader forget that behind the drawing-room manners and matrimonial scheming, her characters are real people trying to find connection and dignity in a world that offers them very little room to manoeuvre.
In the highly influential 1995 BBC television adaptation, Colin Firth’s portrayal of Mr Darcy became especially iconic, emphasising romantic intensity in ways that contrasted with the novel’s more ironic and socially critical tone — and introduced Austen’s world to an entirely new generation of readers and viewers.
